Start with construction, then consider decoration

A closed abaya and an embroidered abaya are not opposing categories. One describes the front opening; the other describes a surface detail. A single piece might be a closed, butterfly-cut abaya with embroidery. When comparing listings, write down the opening, body shape, sleeve shape and fabric separately. This gives you a clearer picture of what you will actually receive.

Closed abayas

A closed design has a continuous front, though it may include a short neckline opening or hidden fastening. The uninterrupted line can make an outfit easy to coordinate. Check how you put it on, whether the neckline is comfortable and whether the lower width allows your normal walking stride. Closed does not automatically mean opaque: light fabrics can still need a suitable base layer.

Open-front abayas

An open abaya works as an outer layer over a dress or separates. Some have buttons, snaps or ties, while others are intended to stay open. Ask whether the listing includes the inner dress and whether the fastenings run the full length. A photograph of a complete outfit does not establish what is included in the price. Butterfly and generous draped cuts

Butterfly, farasha and batwing are names you may encounter around wide, draped shapes. They are not a universal sizing system. Look at where the sleeve joins the body and how the material hangs when the arms are lowered. The same amount of fabric can feel fluid in a lighter cloth and substantial in a heavier one. Check sleeve openings if you will be writing, eating or carrying a bag.

Straight, A-line and tailored styles

A straight cut keeps a relatively consistent line through the body. An A-line shape widens towards the hem. Tailored interpretations may add lapels, defined shoulders, cuffs or seams. These details influence movement and layering, so compare garment measurements instead of choosing solely from the model photograph. A structured shoulder can need a different fit from a loose dropped shoulder.

Head abayas and occasion finishes

A head abaya drapes from the head, with construction and regional terminology that can differ from shoulder styles. Ask the maker for wearing instructions and measurements suited to that design. Occasion abayas, meanwhile, may use embroidery, beadwork or contrasting trims on several different cuts. Consider where the decoration sits, whether it catches on a bag and how the garment must be cleaned.

A useful comparison checklist

  • How does it open, and what keeps it closed?
  • What are the actual length, width and sleeve measurements?
  • Does it include an inner dress, belt or shayla?
  • Is the cloth lined, sheer or opaque in daylight?
  • Can you sit, reach and walk in the intended outfit?
