Check what the number actually means

Some sellers use numbers associated with garment length; others use letter sizes or their own system. Do not assume that a number is a body measurement or that it uses the unit you expect. Check the chart heading, the measurement diagram and whether the dimensions describe the body or the finished garment. Ask for clarification before using a height-based recommendation.

Measure a similar garment first

Lay an abaya you wear comfortably on a flat surface without pulling the material. Fasten it as you normally would. Measure from the points specified in the seller’s diagram, because a shoulder-to-hem measurement cannot be compared directly with a different starting point. Record the units and note whether the garment is stretchy or loose.

For a different style, your existing abaya is a reference rather than an exact template. A dropped shoulder and a fitted shoulder distribute fabric differently. The styles guide can help explain why the outline changes.

Length and footwear

Consider the shoes you will wear most often. A hem that works with heels may drag with flats. Check your preferred length while standing naturally, then test walking and climbing a step if you have the garment to hand. Do not rely on a model’s height alone: posture, footwear and the sample length can alter how a photograph looks.

Avoid choosing extra length as a substitute for width. If a piece feels restrictive across the body, a longer size may not solve the problem.

Shoulders, sleeves and room to move

Look at shoulder width, sleeve length and the opening at the wrist. Reach forward as if using a desk, bend your elbows and lift a bag. A sleeve should work with those movements without repeatedly needing adjustment. If you prefer wider sleeves, think about eating, cooking and desk work as well as the look of the silhouette.

Check room through the chest, hip and upper arm over your intended clothes. A flat width is not the same as a full circumference. If the retailer supplies only a flat measurement, confirm how it was taken before comparing it with body measurements.

Open fronts, belts and inner dresses

With an open abaya, fit includes the inner outfit and how much overlap you want at the front. A belt can change the drape but does not fix tight shoulders or sleeves. If a set includes an inner dress, check its measurements separately; it may follow a different cut from the outer garment.

Before confirming your order

  • Save the size chart and product description you used.
  • Confirm the unit, measuring points and included pieces.
  • Ask whether alterations change the return options.
  • Compare the cut with your normal daily activities.
  • Keep the packaging and tags while checking fit after delivery.

There is no universal height-to-size chart on this page because it could give misleading precision across different brands. Use our online buying checklist to check the remaining details before you order.
