What is an abaya?
An abaya is a long, loose outer garment worn over clothing. For many women in the Gulf, it is part of everyday life, and a deeply personal way to dress.
Often associated with a flowing black silhouette, the abaya also appears in different colours, cuts and finishes. It is distinct from the shayla, a scarf worn over the hair, and from a niqab, a face covering. These garments serve different purposes and are not interchangeable terms.

A continuous front creates a clean, flowing line. A versatile starting point for an everyday wardrobe, with ease of movement shaped by the cut.

The abaya’s history is best understood through the people, places and garments that shaped it, rather than a single origin story.
A tradition of outer dress
Loose outer garments form part of the region’s dress heritage. In Qatar Museums’ account of women’s wardrobes, the abaya was worn when leaving the house, alongside a wider wardrobe of everyday and festive clothing. It was one part of women’s lives, not their entire wardrobe.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism describes the flowing black abaya as part of Emirati women’s national dress. Its cultural meaning sits alongside modesty, family traditions and the individual choices of the women who wear it.
Contemporary designers work with colour, tailoring, textiles and decorative detail to give the abaya new expressions. Heritage and experimentation can exist in the same piece. The result is a garment that continues to change with its wearers.
03 / MORE THAN A SILHOUETTE
Why the abaya matters in the Gulf.
Across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, dress traditions are diverse. The abaya is important to many women, but it does not represent every woman or every occasion.
Modesty
Its loose shape and coverage support the way many women choose to practise modest dress. The meaning of modesty is personal, and can be informed by faith, family and community.
Belonging
For some wearers, the abaya connects everyday life with cultural identity and family heritage. The familiar silhouette can carry memories as well as a sense of place.
Everyday versatility
An outer layer can work over different outfits for work, visits and daily errands. Comfort depends on the fabric, lining, fit and conditions, not simply on the garment’s name.
Individual expression
A sleeve, a subtle stitch, a shade or a particular drape can make a piece feel personal. Women and designers give the abaya meaning through how they create and wear it.

Start with fabric and opacity
Check fibre composition, weight and lining. Crepe describes a texture rather than one fibre; fabrics sold under similar names can feel very different. Hold the material against light and consider whether it needs another layer.
Look beyond the size label
Compare the designer’s measurements with a garment you already wear. Check shoulder width, sleeve length and overall length, allowing for your usual footwear. Make sure you can sit, reach and walk comfortably.
Match the piece to your day
For frequent wear, consider easy movement and practical care. For special occasions, check the weight and placement of embellishments. Always follow the garment’s care label, especially for delicate trims.

A few common questions.
Are abayas always black?
No. Black is a familiar and culturally significant choice in parts of the Gulf, but contemporary abayas also come in other colours. Colour alone does not define an abaya.
Is an abaya the same as a hijab?
No. An abaya is an outer garment for the body. Hijab can refer to modesty more broadly and is also commonly used to describe a headscarf. A shayla is a particular scarf style often worn with an abaya in the Gulf.
Can I shop on Abaya Store now?
